Clinical and Community Psychologist specialized in community mental health. Born in the Azores, has completed his first PhD at Boston University (USA) Including advanced transcultural Psychiatric training with Prof. Murphy at McGill University (CAN); His second PhD was completed at Universidade Porto and Aggregation at Universidade dos Açores. He was the first elected President of the European Community Psychology Association (2005) and is a member of the Society of Community Research and Action (27th APA Division). Currently, coordinates APPsyCI – Applied Psychology Research Centre Capabilities and Inclusion. Has co-edited a book on Transformative Community Mental Health published by APA, and is publishing with his doctoral student’s papers in the Journal of Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Psychological Assessment, International Journal of Mental Health Systems, no Journal of Environmental Psychology and the European Journal of Homelessness. Ornelas was the PI on the FCT Project (PTDC PSI-PCL/113301/2009) and has been a partner in several European projects such as 2011-13 Housing First Europe VS/2011/0169, PROGRESS EU Program on Social Experimentation; 2007-11 COST Action IS0603 Health and Social Care for Migrants and Ethnic Minorities in Europe. In 2016-2019 coordinates Horizon 2020 GA/726997 HOME_EU Reversing Homelessness in Europe. José Ornelas is also a founding member and supervisor of the community mental health program implemented by AEIPS-Associação para o Estudo e Integração Psicossocial a NGO witch implements Housing First Program in Lisboa, Portugal for homeless persons.
